enlist in marinesCAMP FOSTER, Okinawa The Marine Corps is promoting its re-enlistment procedures in an attempt to enhance the quality of its ranks, according to purchases approved by the commandant in May.

The new system, which switches into effect this summer, allows Marines additional time to apply for re-enlistment and rates servicemembers who want to re-enlist on four efficiency levels. It also allows ordering generals to request that extremely qualified Marines be placed directly into job positions where the service currently has reached its quota.

The changes will help the service select the most qualified candidates to keep within the line of duty instead of just re-enlisting the first in line to volunteer, according to the May 11 purchase released by the Marine Corps Manpower and Reserve Affairs Department.

“The re-enlistment process is amended to assist leaders in identifying those Marines who have excelled in relation to their peers and provide for higher competition in re-enlisting,” the order says.

The yearly “re-enlistment season” for Marines will increase through 30 days to 90 times – from July 1 till Sept. 30 – before head office starts filling the most popular job opportunities, the service said.

Next, commanders will evaluate Marines who want to re-enlist on a new four-tiered system.

Highest performing Marines will be graded a level 1, which means they execute all tasks, even those that are usually difficult or routine, in an excellent manner.

Level 2 Marines are usually competitive and highly competent yet sometimes need help with difficult jobs, while level 3 servicemembers could be counted on to perform regular responsibilities but usually require assistance for almost any work that is not routine.

The most affordable rating is level 4, which will be assigned to Marines that may or may not meet minimal service standards.

In an attempt in order to fill highly technical and unpopular jobs, the Corps has begun providing re-enlistees lateral moves to positions that require to be filled for the service to work.

But if popular job opportunities are all filled, a commanding common can request re-enlistment approval through Marine Corps headquarters to allow extremely qualified Marines into the position in any case, according to the published order.
